OSTON – In response to declining enrollment and budget constraints, Boston Public Schools announced that seven schools will be closed at the end of the school year. The decision came after a months-long review process and public input.
“We understand this is a difficult decision for our community, but it is necessary for the long-term viability of our school system,” said Superintendent Brenda Cassellius. The seven schools slated for closure are West Roxbury Academy, Urban Science Academy, McCormack Middle School, Lee Academy Pilot School, Channing Elementary School, Community Academy, and Boston Green Academy.
The district will work with families to transition students to other schools, considering factors such as proximity, academic programs, and support services. Teachers and staff affected by the closures will be reassigned to other schools within the district.
The closures are part of a larger plan to optimize resources and improve educational outcomes for students in the Boston Public Schools system. The district is also exploring options for repurposing the closed school buildings to benefit the community.
Despite the closures, the district remains committed to providing a high-quality education for all students and ensuring that resources are allocated in a way that best meets the needs of the community.
