Keep the peace on Chicago’s Lower West Side. That was the goal of a group of activists and advocates who gathered near a federal immigration detention center in the Pilsen neighborhood recently to protest a loud buzzer that has been echoing through the neighborhood.

According to the Chicago Sun-Times, the buzzer – which sounds every time the door to the detention center opens – has been a source of annoyance and disruption for both the residents of the neighborhood and the migrants inside the facility. Advocates claim that the buzzer is intentionally loud and obnoxious, and is meant to intimidate and harass the migrants.

“We are here to stand in solidarity with our migrant brothers and sisters who are being subjected to this constant noise pollution,” said one protester at the rally. “This buzzer is not only a nuisance, but it is also a blatant violation of their human rights.”

The protesters called on the Department of Homeland Security to lower the volume of the buzzer or find an alternative way to alert staff when the door opens. They also demanded better treatment for the migrants inside the facility, who they say are already suffering from deplorable conditions.

As the rally came to a close, the group promised to continue their fight against what they see as an unjust and inhumane practice. “We will not rest until the migrants in this facility are treated with the dignity and respect they deserve,” said another protester. “We stand united against this oppressive buzzer and all forms of discrimination.”
