LA County health officials are warning swimmers to avoid getting into the ocean at several popular beaches due to high levels of bacteria in the water.

According to a report by the Department of Public Health, several beaches including Avalon Beach in Catalina, and Topanga State Beach in Malibu have exceeded the state standards for bacteria levels in the water.

The increased bacteria levels are believed to be due to recent rainfall that has washed pollutants into the ocean. Swimming in contaminated water can lead to illnesses such as stomach flu, ear infections, and skin rashes.

Health officials are advising beachgoers to avoid swimming in these areas until further notice. They are also conducting regular water quality tests to determine when it will be safe for the public to return to the water.
