The criticism was loud and direct at one of the biggest forums held by the CHA given concerns raised by many tenants about living conditions, slow repairs, insufficient staffing, and more.

“Don’t sit up there and lie to us and tell us the sky is not blue when you know it’s blue,” one resident told Jenkins. “We need something much better than this to help us to live in better homes.”

At the virtual meeting, Jenkins was questioned about a variety of issues and got an earful from residents like Katina Williams—she’s lived in Marshall Field Garden Apartments for two decades.

“The maintenance is horrible,” Williams said. “They don’t come when you call, they don’t come when you email. They don’t come when you put a letter in the dropbox.”

Williams complained that she’s had a leak in her apartment for months that still hasn’t been fixed. When she cleans, mold does not go away, she said.

CHA has overhauled its system to handle maintenance requests. The housing authority finished up a nearly yearlong project in December that installed new technology to help track repair requests.

Last month, CHA announced it will also be spending $1.95 million for the maintenance of senior housing properties. Almost 1,600 units across the city will get repairs.

“We are focused on customer service and it is very clear to me that the challenges we face regarding property management are significant, which is why we started implementing changes last year,” Jenkins said.
